First Communion Gift Guide 2012

The sacrament that all over our country is most associated with spring and the upcoming month of May is, of course, First Communion.  What a special day this is in a child's life!  There are many gifts available, but for this gift guide I tried to look for some unique items that not everyone might find.  These twelve gifts range in price from $6.95-$39.95.

My mom first brought my attention to this new book, and I was so excited.  In Friendship With Jesus: Pope Benedict Talks to Children on their First Holy Communion, Pope Benedict answers the questions of children who had recently made their First Communions.  This book is $14.95 from Aquinas and More.

Another book that is sure to make a wonderful impression is the Princess And The Kiss, which is $12.99 from Aquinas and More.  The description reads, "A loving king and queen present their daughter with a gift from God - her first kiss - to keep or to give away. The wise girl waits for the man who is worthy of her precious gift. Where is he and how will she ever find him? The surprising answer in this marvelous parable will touch the heart of parents and child alike."

The version of this books for boys is The Squire and the Scroll: A Tale of the Rewards of a Pure Heart.  These books contain wonderful ideas and images to impress on a child's mind while they are young.

I think that a First Communion doll is such a sweet gift and sure to be loved by any little girl.  And what could be better than playing First Communion over and over again?  Lillian Vernon has this soft My First Communion Doll for $21.99, which can be personalized.

Or this cute little First Communion Girl "Piksee" doll is $12 from Etsy.

And finally, if the little girl already has an American Girl or similar doll, there are many First Communion dresses available for those dolls, like this one from Etsy or this one from St. Patrick's Guild.

To capture the interest of active young boys (and girls as well), try a sports medal.  St. Patrick's Guild has a wide assortment of medals for both genders, ranging in price from $10.95-$39.95.
These Jesus Sports Figurines for $21.95 are also really cute.  I love the inscription, "Jesus is my Coach."

For girls of this age, I love the idea of saint paper dolls!  New Hope Publications has saint paper dolls of St. Therese and her family, St. Joan of Arc, and Blessed Kateri Tekawitha.  They are $10.95 each, and they appear to have lovely pictures.

Boys' First Communion outfits don't get as much attention as girls', but a nice way to dress them up is with a religious tie clip.  My husband still uses a cross tie clip that he got for his First Communion, and I know that he treasures it.  This Cross Tie Clasp from St. Patrick's Guild is just $6.95.
A beautiful cross or medal on a necklace is a wonderful gift for girls, and there are many available.  For a unique spin and also a very inexpensive gift, I love St. Patrick's Guild's Lamb Reconciliation Pendant.  I love the idea of giving a gift to remember First Reconilliation, and this would work equally well as a First Communion gift.

Finally, another beautiful and unique book that is sure to make an impression on a young First Communicant is The Weight of a Mass, by Josephine Nobisso.  This story is a fable about the true value of the mass, and it has the most gorgeous, colorful illustrations.  It is $9.95 for the paperback or $17.95 for the hardcover from Emmanuel Books.

And, I am excited to announce that Emmanuel Books has generously offered a free copy of The Weight of a Mass to one lucky winner!
